CANVAS YOUNG TALENTS AWARD

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote art and culture, and in the spirit of encouraging young adults wishing to pursue artistic careers, Canvas has teamed up with Dubai-based artist Katya Trabulsy to hold a series of workshops that will conclude with an exhibition and competition. Young adults aged between 10-17 are invited to enroll in Trabulsy's art workshops that will take place weekly from 3 October 2009 to 31 May 2010 in Jumeirah, Dubai. The artworks produced will be exhibited at the American University in Dubai and three prizes will be given to the most promising talents by a jury comprised of leading members of the media and arts industry.

Canvas Contemporary Charity Art Auction
Date - 27 November, 2006
Location - One & Only Royal Mirage, Dubai

The Canvas Contemporary Charity Art Auction and exhibition featured specially-commissioned visual art pieces kindly donated by some of the most celebrated artists in the region. Many of these unique works entered a private auction conducted by Christie's, which raised a phenomenal amount for the Dubai-based charity, The Al Noor Centre (www.alnooruae.org).

Using the Nokia N90 - the latest in mobile phone technology - some of Pakistan's leading artists redefined the essence of fine art photography. In association with Nokia, HP, Christie's and Canvas magazine the fonetography Charity Art Auction began with a breathtaking exhibition of these unique photographs followed by a thrilling gala auction in aid of The Citizens Foundation

Location - Rotana Beach Hotel & Towers, Abu Dhabi

A photo of the Roman columns of Baalbeck taken by Lebanese gallerist Saleh Barakat was sold for a staggering 65,000AED at the fonetography Charity Art Auction in Abu Dhabi in aid of the UAE Red Crescent campaign for Lebanon. Using the Nokia N90, images by 10 of Lebanon's leading architects and artists were auctioned by Christie's, raising a grand total of 350,000AED. The fonetography series has raised over the $1.18 million for national charities across the region to date.

 

 

Canvas for Lebanon

Members of the Lebanese community in Dubai have set to work on creating an exciting fundraising campaign that seeks to generate support for those suffering in Lebanon. The Canvas Relief Committee for Lebanon, a team made up of readers of Canvas, the region's premier art and culture magazine, already held their first event for the benefit of the UAE Red Crescent. The Fashion Charity Sale raised a staggering 80,000AED to help alleviate the suffering in Lebanon.

 

 

Canvas visits Art Basel

The 37th edition of Art Basel took place in Switzerland 14-18 June. Some 300 galleries from the four corners of the world overcame stiff competition to be selected to participate. Canvas is the first magazine from the Arab world to be invited to attend one of the world's most prestigious contemporary art fairs. Canvas contributor, Lulu Al-Sabah, also participated in the popular panel discussion, 'The Future of the Museum: Art Institutions in the Middle East'at the fair. Thanks to Canvas, art from the Middle East looks to play a greater role in future editions of this renowned art fair.

 

 

Canvas Kids

As part of its ongoing bid to support youth involvement in art and for the third consecutive year, Canvas was delighted to sponsor a showcase of work by the young artists from the atelier of Dubai-based artist, Katya Traboulsi. Her weekly tutoring sessions give budding artists aged five to 16-years old the chance to express themselves through painting. The culmination of this year's work was a magnificent exhibition, which was held in June at the Green Art Gallery in Dubai. Art lovers, including parents, friends and the children themselves enjoyed viewing the promising artwork.

 

 

Canvas and Christie's

Mixed Media Publishing is the regional consultant for Christie's and advised the international auction house on their selection of contemporary Arab art for their inaugural auction in Dubai in May 2006. 'Where the Two Oceans Meet (Variant No.3)' by Ahmed Moustafa, the painting which graced the cover of the May/June issue of Canvas, reached the highest ever price for a work by an Arab artist ($284,800) at the inaugural. Selling no less than 120 works by artists from the Arab world, Iran , India and the West, many of which were previewed exclusively in Canvas, the auction surpassed expectations, grossing a total of $8.5 million - evidence that the region's art market is maturing fast.

 

 

The Canvas Gala Dinner

To celebrate the collaboration between the world's largest auction house and the international magazine for art and culture from the Arab world and Middle East, the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Canvas, Ali Khadra (Christie's regional consultant) hosted a glittering private dinner on the eve of the international auction house's inaugural auction in Dubai. Leading patrons of the arts from across the region and beyond enjoyed a sumptuous banquet among millions of dollars' worth of art, including masterpieces by Jerome, Renoir and Andy Warhol. Distinguished guests departed with a gift of knowledge courtesy of Dubai Holding - the commemorative catalogue of 'Word into Art: Artists from the Middle East' which is currently on show at the British Museum in London.

The third in a series of charity art auctions was held in Jeddah to celebrate the country's finest photographers and raise funds for underprivileged children. Under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Jawaher bint Majed bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Canvas welcomed hundreds of art lovers to the first ever private charity art auction to be held in the Kingdom. Featuring a unique collection of photographic prints taken by ten outstanding Saudi artists on the Nokia N90 camera phone and co-sponsored by HP, guests had the chance to bid for their favourite pieces in an event chaired by international auctioneers, Christie's. Over $1 million was raised for The Charitable Society for Orphan Welfare of Makkah.

The second in a series of charity art auctions was held in Kuwait city to celebrate the country's creativity and generate financial support for one of the country's most deserving charities. The exhibition of photographs attracted a large number of the city's high society, many of whom bid for pieces from this unique collection of photographic prints by some of Kuwait's most talented artists on the Nokia N90 camera phone. Co-sponsored by HP, guests had the chance to bid for their favourite pieces in an event chaired by international auctioneers, Christie's, the proceeds of which went to The Kuwait Association for the Care of Children in Hospital.

The global phenomenon of Fonetography arrived in Dubai with the first in a series of art auctions, an event that celebrated the Emirate's talent while also raising funds for Foresight, the national charity for the blind and visually impaired.
