PICASSO’S CENTURY
Abu Dhabi – Emirates Palace Hotel, Monday 19 May 2008
Module 1: The Birth of a Genius, the Blue and Rose Periods: 1889-1907
Picasso’s impact on 20th century art in Europe (until 1950) and America (until 1980) is just as unique as it is predominant. The lyrical Blue and Rose Periods can be interpreted as a single entity, which dealt with all the important Avant-garde movements around 1900.
Module 2: The Triumph of Cubism: 1907-1921
Cubism is the essential revolution in the history of painting. Instead of employing an imitative concept of painting, Picasso and his friend Georges Braque created a painterly world, which from 1907 onwards began to stand for itself.
Module 3: The return to tradition and the Metamorphosis: 1917-1945
Picasso, over nearly 10 years, rejuvenates the avant-garde by immersing it in everything from the rich humanistic traditions of Antiquity to the theatrical conventions of Diaghilev's Russian Ballets.
Module 4: Variations on the Masters: 1945-1973
From 1945 until his death, Picasso explored great masterpieces of the past in painting and ceramics. His paraphrases always reflect a deep passion for art of any time.
Module 5: Picasso at the Metropolitan Museum
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, boasts one of the world’s most extensive collections of the work of Picasso, exceeded only by the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Musée Picasso, Paris
Module 6: Picasso & the Art Market
This module will examine Picasso’s productivity and his relationship with his dealers. The evolution of the international market will also be explored with a focus on the artworks that affected the market, leading to their status in the Contemporary art scene.
